Leather quality defects

Have you considered what kind of defects there might be in the quality of leather?

Leather quality defects include: cracking, fading or staining surface, faint or chemical smell, excessive dryness or moisture sensitivity, and lack of coating or artificiality Good quality leather is soft and flexible, and a drop of water dropped on it will absorb and darken the leather momentarily, while lower quality leather does not absorb water properly.

  • Cracked or chipped surface : Bonded leather and low-quality leathers scratch, peel and split easily.
  • Fading : UV radiation and excessive heat can cause leather to fade.
  • Staining : Gray areas caused by salt can appear on the surface if the leather is exposed to excessive moisture and dries quickly.
  • Bubbling: Underfloor heating or radiators can cause bubbles on the surface as they evaporate the leather's natural oils.

Quality defects can also include:

  • Smell: High-quality leather has a rich, sweet scent. Faux leather often smells like plastic or chemicals, or has no scent at all.
  • Water absorption: If the leather does not absorb water at all or does not seem to absorb water, it may be a sign of poor quality or an artificial coating.
  • Weak durability: Bonded leather deteriorates over time and is significantly less durable than genuine leather.
  • Humidity sensitivity: Leather can be damaged by moisture, especially if it is not properly treated or protected.

Moisture protection is the primary way to protect your new leather product, especially in autumn and spring when humidity is at its highest.
